A Tribe of Women all to Myself

6/25/2026 10:09:14 AM | By Holli May Thomas | Comment on this

When I was four, I got into a LOT of trouble for taking my grandmother's red lipstick and drawing landscapes all over her pristine white bathroom.
I knew that I wanted to be an artist at a young age, but my mom had other ideas and made me take piano lessons. It just wasn't my THING so I was relentless with my begging to take art lessons. Mom finally gave in and found one studio near us that would take me in at the age of eight. I was the youngest in a class of much older women and all of them made me feel loved and appreciated for my kooky ideas. It was like I had an entire room of grandmothers to myself. An entire tribe of wise women all to myself.
Now I am the same age as those women. So when I go to my space every Saturday at Winter Street Studios in Houston, Texas,  I remember my back story. I remember the struggle and when someone wants to talk about their own art process and what they are working on when looking at my art, I let them. Again - the consistent circles are ever present. May the circles in your own life never end. Namaste y'all!

Happy Summer Solstice!

6/20/2026 9:00:49 AM | By Holli May Thomas | Comment on this

I have over two hundred photos of sunrises on my phone so I had to narrow it down to one and chose this I took at Goose Island State Park in Rockport, Texas where my parents lived for seventeen years.  Pay a visit to the "Big Tree" if you are passing through those parts. Fellow tree huggers - you will be amazed!
A few sentences from my morning writing session:

Happy Summer Solstice!

May the longest day of the year

bring light into your darkness and

hope in the places where you need it most.

Thank you Momma Earth for giving

us the warmth of the sun

And all the cycles and

seasons of our life!

-Holli May Thomas

The summer solstice is one of my favorite days of the year.
As a kid I LOVED getting on my bike at the butt crack of dawn and head out the door to explore the neighborhood until dusk when all the neighborhood kids would gather in our yard to start playing games. Oh the smells and sounds of summer! I am about to hop on my bike after I finish posting this to do a little neighborhood exploration!
Did any of you ever play a game called Ghost in the Graveyard? It is the opposite of hide and seek where one person would be IT and hide and everyone else would stay on home base and start counting one o'clock, two o'clock up until midnight to give the person that was IT time to hide and once someone found them, everyone would have to run back to home base before they were tagged by the person that was found? That was my favorite game to play at night. No wonder my mom wanted us out of the house all day - we would scream at the top of our lungs trying to get back to home base before being tagged.
I hope you find a moment to go outside today and appreciate the treasure of Planet Earth. I had over two hundred plus photos of sunrises on my phone so I chose this one because it show the view from my writing desk in my backyard art shed. Have a super Saturday and a most wonderful day!

Vision Quest

Vision Quest

The old you –

the one that tells you to blend in,

hide in the shadows,

and not express yourself

is no longer present.

But the new you-

the emboldened you

carrying momentum in

your once small hand

knows instinctually

the empowered path to take.

This altar has a Cedar driftwood header, many layers of paper and textiles, and hand forged metal reaching to the top of the once in a lifetime Agave bloom with a golden heart placed inside a flower in the shape of an open hand.

I wanted this piece to be powerful from the bottom up and demonstrate the commanding feeling of leaving your shadow self behind for your vision quest forward.

I can be the spark, the lantern, that shines in the dark.

Lost and Found

Moving from the mud,
I am mindful of the past
and continue my journey
forward into a present place of peace.
I can be the spark,
the lantern,
that shines in the dark.

Large rising Lotus garden with meandering Koi fish. A hopeful piece in vivid color! One of my absolute favorite books is "The Untethered Soul" by Michael Singer. I read it many years ago and it changed my trajectory not just in my artwork, but for my life.
This piece is part of my "Convergence" collection that will be exhibited starting this Saturday at Winter Street Studios in Houston, Texas which ALSO coincides with Second Saturday where every artist opens their studio door so you can swing by and talk to us in person.
"Lost and Found" has already sold but as you know, I love color and have more pieces in my studio. Swing by and meet me in person along with my awesome studio mates or visit me at Holli May Thomas Fine Art if you do not live in the Houston Metro area where you can sign up for new art alerts or my monthly newsletter.
Namaste y'all!

Expanding Your Limitations

6/7/2026 9:36:30 AM | By Holli May Thomas | Comment on this

Good morning ☀️

I had the best conversation yesterday with a delightful random soul that walked into the studio. Someone that worked long hours as an electrician, but wanted to delve into his art practice again because it offered him a place of peace when he was younger. He was walking the hallways of our building looking for inspiration.

We talked about artist dates and the concept of removing yourself from your norm for a few hours to a new environment to let your mind wander. The dots may not connect that day, but eventually it all lines up. This is how I view the universe. I gave him a bunch of ideas and sent him on his way.

Life wasn’t meant to be lived in a vacuum. When I am feeling spiritually down or disjointed, I automatically seek those places that comfort me within paint and my writing journal, but I also own the knowledge that when I step out of my comfort zone is when I expand my own limitations. I wish you well on your own journey

Beyond the Veil of Stardust and Color

6/4/2026 8:51:35 AM | By Holli May Thomas | Comment on this

I am in an exhibition at Winter Street Studios in Houston, Texas that starts next week and the theme was "convergence".

I thought about this concept and my mind wandered to color, unity, and finally solar systems.  I had already written the piece of prose below a while back and placed a post-it note in my writing journal to save for a future piece.

I ended up creating a rising bird telling a story of peace and space through her coat of many colors along with her disjointed tail feathers tying together worlds through threads of gold.  Enjoy and peace be with you friends!

Beyond the Veil

Beyond the veil

of stardust and color.

Beyond the pale

of interstellar seed starters

lie the uncommon fruits

of humanity and peace filled harbors.
